Are you a fan of classic lemonade, but looking to try something new? Well, we have just the drink for you! Rosemary lemonade is a delightful beverage that combines the familiar taste of lemonade with the subtle hints of herbs. While you may think it’s a recent trend, the infusion of herbs in lemonade has actually been enjoyed by thirsty people for centuries throughout the Mediterranean and Middle East.

  • fresh lemons
  • fresh rosemary
  • sugar
  • water

How to make rosemary lemonade

Is so easy!

  1. I make a rosemary simple syrup (see instructions below.)
  2. I do my classic lemonade, which is made with a 4:1 ratio of water to freshly squeezed lemon juice. Feel free to adjust this ratio to your liking.
  3. I add the rosemary syrup to taste (the rosemary syrup will sweeten and flavor the lemonade).
  4. Cool.
  5. Serve over ice garnished with a sprig of fresh rosemary.

Rosemary lemonade FAQS and TIPS

  1. Can I use dried rosemary instead of fresh rosemary?
    • No, you really need the fresh herb for this ~ the essential oils in the fresh rosemary are what give this lemonade its flavor.
  2. Can I skip the simple syrup and just mix in the rosemary?
    • Yes, that will work. Mash the rosemary and then add the lemonade. Strain before serving with ice. Since you won’t get the sweetener from the simple syrup, you’ll need to sweeten the lemonade with sugar or honey.
  3. Can I use rosemary essential oil in rosemary lemonade?
    • I do not recommend using essential oil as it is highly concentrated and potent. It’s best to stick with rosemary sprigs for a more balanced fresh flavor.
  4. Can I make rosemary lemonade in advance?
    • Yes, it will keep for several days in the fridge, but don’t add the ice until ready to serve.
  5. I don’t love rosemary, what else can I use?
    • Attempt mint, thyme or lavender flower buds for cooking. You can try basil, or even tarragon, but be careful with that, it’s strong. You can make simple syrup the same way, with these different ingredients.
  6. Can I make a keto simple syrup?
    • Yes, you can use Splenda, for example.
  7. How would you use the honey to make the simple syrup?
    • Just substitute it for sugar, in the same amount.
  8. Can I use bottled lemon juice?
    • Yes. I prefer fresh, but bottled will work. Use it in the same amount.
  9. Can I make this into a sparkling rosemary lemonade?
    • Yeah! Just use sparkling water instead of regular water to mix with the lemon juice. Do not mix until just before serving.
  10. How would you make a frozen rosemary lemonade?
    • Freeze the lemonade in ice cube trays, then blend in a blender until slushy.
  11. Can I make this into a cocktail?
    • You bet, just add vodka (or gin!) Use 1 part alcohol to 2 parts rosemary lemonade and serve over ice.

Be creative!

I poured my leftover rosemary lemonade into my popsicle mold; then froze until solid ~ these were absolutely fabulous! (Amazing after a Mediterranean themed dinner.) Almost any drink can be frozen in popsicles.so keep that in mind when the temperature rises.

Instructions

simple syrup

  1. stir the sugar and water together in a medium saucepan. Add the rosemary sprigs. Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 minutes.
  2. Remove from heat and allow pan to cool completely.
  3. Strain and transfer to an airtight container or jar. Cool.

  1. Combine the lemon juice and water. Add the rosemary simple syrup, prove. You won’t use it all, start with 1/2 -3/4 cup and work your way up from there.
  2. Chill lemonade well before serving. Do not add ice at this point.
  3. Serve the lemonade over ice with a lemon wedge and rosemary sprig.
