Renowned folk singer Roger Whittaker, known for his hit song “Durham Town” and whistling talents, has passed away at 87. His career began in folk clubs, and he achieved fame with songs like “The Skye Boat Song,” a duet with Des O’Connor in 1986. Other notable hits include “The Last Farewell” and “New World in the Morning,” with over 50 million records sold worldwide.
Roger, born on March 22, 1936, in Nairobi, Kenya, to English parents, was deeply influenced by the music of East Africa during his childhood. He once expressed the impact of African rhythms on his music.
Despite initially considering a career as a teacher or doctor, he pursued medicine at the University of Cape Town in South Africa after completing national service in Kenya. Eventually, his passion for music led him to the UK, where he studied and began composing songs during his time at Bangor University.
Roger’s journey into music started when his singles entered the British Singles Charts while he was still a student. Encouraged by a professor, he decided to take a chance in show business, leading him to a successful career.
In August 1964, Roger married Natalie, and they welcomed five children together. His final stage performance was in 2003 during a tour in Germany. He retired to France with his wife in 2012.
